about

Written for Jimmy Dowling and Sara Roberts.

Sara's name is normally pronounced "Sah Rah" but in this instance I used a Bob Dylan reference to one of my favourite childhood tunes. This song paints Jimmy as a favourite Melbourne songwriter- and he certainly was among the inner northern musicians. He is a suave character, full of great tales and immense style, and with a great head on him for music and music history.

The most notable thing about Jimmy is his use of space in his music. He never crowds a song.

lyrics

Jimmy was a Fighter, A hard Drinker, Hard worker
Jimmy fell in love about a thousand times a week
When Jimmy held a pint at the bar, in the 'Poet
Well All the girls thought that he looked just like James Dean

Jimmy took off, he went up North
Into the Cain, cos he was able
He said the Night Life in the city won't put food on the table
And he worked out in the sun, til he was Golden like the sugar and at night
In the dark, he'd smoke and play the old Piano

Sara, Sara, Paint your colours on the door
Sara, Sara, the stories in the images that we hang on the walls

Ah Jimmy went out further to the edge of the blue water
where he found her in the dunes, at least he swears that's where he met her
Little girl with big dreams, come and dance down in the valley
Oh I'll be your Jimmy D, You can be my sweet Grace Kelly
I'll work out in the rains, I'll make time for you to paint,
I'll play My old guitar, you can be my sweet north star.

Sara, Sara, Paint your colours on the door
Sara, Sara, the stories in the images that we hang on the walls

But We stay here, we play tunes, in the city in the bars
but you know one gig a week it doesn't get you very far, and
Every other day we raise a glass to Jimmy Dowling
How we miss his stories, How he'd leave us howling
And he writes, ah letters tells us all about the weather
Says he thinks he's comin home soon, and he thinks he's bringing Sara

Sara, Sara, Paint your colours on the door
Sara, Sara, the stories in the images that we hang on the walls
